It is the best free antispyware program i have ever noticed. It was working well as a open source it was really handy.

It is most good freeware antispyware programs, including well known titles such as Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware, and Spyware Blaster do not feature automatic updates unless you switch to the paid version. I’ve been using this program for a while and am very satisfied with it.

Note: Spyware Terminator integrates a free open source antivirus software named ClamVir to scan your computer. Although this is a good feature that I recommend, ClamVir does not offer memory resident antivirus protection and you should not consider it to be sufficient antivirus protection. (I.e. use Spyware Teminator for Spyware protection and install another Antivirus program for protection against viruses).

Features of Spyware Terminiator :

* Fast Scan, Full Scan, Customized Scan, Scheduled Scan

* ClamAV antivirus integration (including ClamAV database updates)

* Effective removal of threats, including blocked files on reboot. Quarantines threats. Allows removal of locked files

* Real Time Protection with autmatic live updates.

* HIPS function monitors files for suspicious changes and asks user to intervine if changes to system are not recognized in it’s database.

* File analysis option allows sending of suspicious files to the developers for deep analysis.

* Restore computer to earlier or default setting

Launchy is the ultimate search pad that search files faster than any other application i have ever seen. With Launchy you can search for installed apps rather than browse for them manually in your start menu.

Launchy can be invoked/dismissed by combination keysalt+space by default. It is pre-set to index your start menu links, but can be customized to index any location on your hard drive for any type of file.

For example, I typically always intend to place a lot of files on the desktop. So, I set launchy to index the desktop. I typically deal with (xls, csv, jpg, mp3, exe, zip, rar, etc.) files Launchy is very efficient.

I used a very similar program called Find and Run Robot, but I find that this one (a) is more customizable and flexible, and (b) has a much better look and feel overall (it also has tons of skins).

UNetbootin (Universal Netboot Installer) is a portable freeware, that can work in any platform. It can download and install Linux (or other operating system) on a bootable USB drive or a hard drive partition. It supports about 25+ range of Linux operating systems that are booming up.

It is Editor's pick because you can use your favorite Linux OS with your own settings at anyplace, anywhere, anytime. It lets you to install Linux from an ISO image you already have or it will automatically download from the net.

Special Features :

1. Portable OS First time

2. Keep your own settings that you want to work in your USB

3. Feel Every System as yours

It can also automatically download and create Live versions of various system utilities, such as Parted Magic, System Rescue CD, Ophcrack, and Kaspersky Rescue Disk to name a few examples. If you would like an operating system on a USB drive then this tool is what you’re looking for.

The nice things about booting Linux from a USB rather than a Live CD is that obviously you can save your data on the USB, so it’s a viable computer-on-a-stick, so to speak. The beauty of UNetbootin is not that it can instantly create a bootable OS on a USB for you (which it does), but rather that it can deliver the latest build of so many Linux distros and LiveCD utilities instantly. It is also extremely simple and easy to use; you will literally get through the entire process from start to finish at the press of a button.

More notes below:

* How it works: download and run, no install needed. You will be asked to select your OS or LiveCD from a dropdown (or specify a downloaded ISO), choose where to install (USB drive or local drive), and you’re done. Ok so there are a few other options but most users will not be interested in these.

* Will it work: yes, although when I tried it I was able to install Slax effortlessly but Ubuntu 9.10 Live did not boot. It is possible that I selected the wrong version to install though; I may have needed to select the “netinstall” version from the dropdown for a USB installation.

* Installing other OS’s: it is possible to install any other OS to bootable USB or to a local drive. You will need either an ISO file or disk image file.

* Non-destructive install: which means that it will not format your drive, and any data that you may have on there will be preserved and will still be there even after installation.

* Linux distros supported: a huge list, including the latest builds of Ubuntu (and official derivatives), Damn Small Linux, Frugalware Linux, Sabayon Linux, Puppy Linux, Linux Mint, Arch Linux, Dreamlinux, gNewSense, PCLinuxOS, openSUSE, Mandriva, FreeBSD, Zenwalk, Debian, SliTaz, NetBSD, Fedora, Gentoo, CentOS, FaunOS, MEPIS, Elive, Slax, and xPUD.

* Unsupported distros: if you are interested in a Linux distro that is not supported, simply download it and point Unetbootin to the ISO file.

* System tools supported: Parted Magic (partition manager), SystemRescueCD, (system repair/recovery), Super Grub Disk, Dr.Web Antivirus, F-Secure Rescue CD, Kaspersky Rescue Disk, Backtrack (network analysis), Ophcrack (recover Windows passwords), NTPasswd (reset Windows passwords), Gujin, (a graphical bootloader), Smart Boot Manager (SBM), and FreeDOS.

* Uninstallation: simply format your USB. If removing an uninstall from a local drive you might want to read the instructions on the UNetbootin website. Wish list (or how this software can be even better)

* A cleanup option: UNetbootin downloads and extracts huge ISO files to “Appdata\Local\Temp” and unless you seek them out and erase them afterwards they will occupy space needlessly (and, I have found, by default are not removed by CCleaner).

* Download size indicator: would be nice if it told you the download size of your selected build before you gave the go-ahead, as this might influence what you end up choosing. You will know this once you get to the download screen, of course, and can always go back and change your selection. But it makes more sense to give that info up front. The verdict: very nice; not just for its ease of use but also for the range of supported Live CDs, including terrific system utilities such as parted Magic and the Kaspersky Rescue Disk. Can also be quite handy if you have the ISO for any other OS and want to make a bootable USB out of that. Overall highly recommended.

This is a free application that allows you to use your monitors more effectively by dividing your screen into custom sections. It more effective than Windows 7 snap feature by allowing you to place your windows into any of two, three, or four sections on the screen through drag and drop. It also works with all versions of Windows and even works well alongside the Windows 7 snap feature (you can have both working together simultaneously). It is great software that makes your system more efficient than ever.

Acer GridVista supports a custom configuration for each monitor, and provides a great user experience. It also offers a handful of other functions, such as transparency and stay-on-top options. It is useful freeware that your system needs.

1. It is activated on drag and drop, or by using the special buttons it adds to the top right of your open windows next to the default minimize, maximize, and close buttons (see image to the right).
2. It works with multiple monitors, each with its own custom configuration. It also allows for extending the desktop into external monitors (a feature which I did not test because I do not have one).
3. Acer GridVista Screenshot system trayIt sticks to a range of 4 possible configurations, giving users an excellent range of options while not going overboard with too many screen configurations that may be too complex or esoteric (see images to the bottom, to the right).

4. It adds a couple of other functions: namely transparency and pin on top of other windows.
5. Can easily be disabled: on any individual window: using the aforementioned button extensions on the top right of your window.
6. Plays well with Windows’ 7 snap function. This is because the Windows 7 snap behavior kicks in once you drag a window to the edge, while GridVista can kick in the moment you hold down the mousebutton.

I came home today and there was incoming message waiting with request for software advice. Friend wanted something easy and efficient to convert YouTube video into avi . I knew that Google or Softpedia either would probably give few millions of fitting software so I started with my Opera bookmarks .

And there is it was (in the folder of much buzzed applications) – Any Video Converter (AVC).

What it does

All video converting applications are same. They take video as input and video as output. The more types of video are available (and the less money app costs) – the better it is.

any_video_converter_interface

AVC takes in most of common computer video formats including flash videos. No support for ripping DVD but it does support it as output.

On top of converting functions AVC has internal downloader that supports few video sites – starting with YouTube of course.
Internal workings

As most of its kind AVC is based on FFMPEG . It means that quality for whatever will be exactly same as with most other converters. Such software is mostly only an interface meaning that usability and stability are more important than standard core.
Downsides

My personal opinion but app looks… bad. “Want to be Vista-like but fail” type of looks. I had also experienced some parts of interface getting stuck when toggling sidebar. I’d prefer standard (and productive) window instead of trying to be fancy.

It also shows nagging prompt to go look at paid professional version. Shows it a lot. Very annoying. I checked that compare versions page in the end and in my opinion extra profiles for mobile devices is so not something interesting to pay for.

Aside from interface and being nagware app gave impression of fast and solid solution. Encoding from YouTube was especially efficient – I only had to paste link, choose profile and click Encode . Easy.

Users of expensive converters won’t be impressed but for a freebie this one works excellent.

VLC is well constructed media player that never need external codecs or other softwares and plays pretty much anything you throw at it . It’s well known as solution for playing incomplete or damaged files. For example you can take a look (or at least try to) at video file that is still being downloaded.

Differences with codec packs

Codec packs deeply integrate with system . Any media player (not self-contained) can use them and sometimes other apps rely on codecs to play integrated video.

VLC  player have everything built-in. They don’t contribute to the system and don’t share anything. Better for stability but you are stuck with their interface and they are no help if other apps are having problems with media playback.
Overall. Here it is more Simplified in this new edition Portable VLC.

Freeware, open source, cross-platform. Not natively portable but PortableApps have that covered with their portable build of VLC. Personally I am not using VLC daily but I launch it when other solutions have trouble playing something or if I want to stream something from web without bothering with download.

Comodo System Cleaner is a computer cleanup tool that combines the functionality of registry cleaners, disk cleaners and privacy cleaners in one application. The software can be used to scan the Registry of the computer system for invalid entries, clean temporary and duplicate files from hard drives and to clean privacy related information like log files, last visited locations or histories.

The registry cleaner tool will scan the Windows registry for various invalid entries. Each entry is shown after the scan with the possibility to clean it up. By default a backup of the Registry will be created before any cleaning takes place. It is furthermore possible to schedule regular Registry cleanups or restore a previously created Registry backup.

The disk cleaner is a basic tool that will scan the hard drives of the computer for temporary or duplicate entries giving the user the options to delete those files from the disk. It is nowhere as extensive as tools like CCleaner offer but it covers the most widely used temporary locations.

Prism HUD is a free software with elegant performance and resource monitoring software. It provides a wealth of information in real-time right on the desktop. It 's visual interface is shown in the left.

It is unique about Prism HUD is the way it displays information: it does not display continuous chart; rather, colorful icons appear on the desktop in a designated area of the screen only when events are taking place, and disappear altogether when the event has passed.

The five performance areas include CPU (total usage and each core’s load); Memory (total usage and hard faults); Disk (used space, utilization and transfer rate for each drive); Network (each interface’s transfer rate); and Process (the CPU usage, memory usage, page faults and IO transfer rate for each process). If you only care for a subset of these metrics you can customize the program to show exactly the ones you want.

If you’re interested in what’s going on inside your computer Prism HUD is an excellent resource and performance monitoring software. Here are a more notes on this program:

    * Drill down: which is to say it doesn’t just report the macro level but individual performance data for each process (memory usage, CPU usage, etc.; see screenshots above).
    * Customizable: metrics are displayed within 3 invisible floating panels on the top right of the screen by default. You can add or remove panels or move them around, and you can specify which performance measure (or submeasures) to be displayed in which panels (see image to the right).
    * Lightweight: around 10 megs in memory.

The verdict: if you’re looking for a visually appealing system monitoring software then by all means give Prism HUD a try. It is very light on resources and will let you make the little visualizations as large or small as you want, and place them exactly where you want them to be. If there is one feature that I would have asked for, however, it would be for some sort of logging support, which some people would find crucial for this sort of application.
